Short description. It is a deep psychological analysis of its protagonist and his mental damages that drive him to perform deadly acts for others.

Extensive description. The young student Raskolnikov, whose firm belief that humanitarian ends justify evil leads to the murder of a St. Petersburg petty murderer. But, since committing the crime, guilt will be a constant nightmare with which the student will be unable to live. Dostoyevsky's feverish and compassionate style uniquely follows the recesses of the student's contradictory emotions and reflects the extreme struggle he wrestles with his conscience as he wanders the streets of St. Petersburg. Already in prison, Raskolnikov realizes that happiness can not be achieved by following a plan established a priori for the reason: it must be won with suffering.
