Short description. Great essay that represents the sum of the works and reflections of Carlos Monsiváis.
Extensive description. To interpret Latin American societies, Monsiváis speaks of traveling essences, traits that point to the nomadism of beliefs, traditions, convictions. Because if the essentials of societies do not travel, they disappear; if societies do not fight for their independence, they immobilize themselves. "Do not expect but poison from the stagnant waters." Monsiváis, the most acute chronicler of Mexican life in the second part of the 20th century and the first decade of the 21st, finds in this phrase of William Blake a way to analyze independence and Latin American autonomy ("indefinite and indefinable terms") in a world interrelated by globalization. The result is a mosaic of our similarities in which the author repeats his favorite themes: literature, secularism, cinema, the left, cities, nationalisms, humanism, sexual diversity and secularization, among others. Latin America seen through the eyes of Monsiváis, and vice versa.
