Long description: Billie Jo is the protagonist of this story. A 14-year-old girl who lives in rural Oklahoma, with her father and mother, who is pregnant. The action takes place in the middle of a terrible drought that lasts two years and that makes the locals migrate to the West (California) in search of better job opportunities; Billie Jo's father, however, resists with all his strength to move, hoping that the bad run will end and the wheat will be born in its dusty lands. An accident occurred in the summer of 1934 leaves Billie Jo motherless and from then life becomes increasingly hard and painful.
